Keeping The Home Fires Burning - on 3rd August, 2013

Unusually for me, this will be a very brief post! I've been away for a week in North Yorkshire and come back with a mass of photos to sort through, so this post is a quick fill-in to keep the home fires burning.

At the end of July/beginning of August, there was a Night Heron about 10 miles (16 km) down the road from me. I went to see it twice and both times it was extremely distant. I got up early on Saturday 3rd August in the hope of catching it at its feeding grounds before I set off for Yorkshire, but it was back at its distant roosting location and was still there when I had to leave. HOWEVER - on my way home I passed by my Little Owl Site No.02 and two adult owls were out.

The first one was peeking distantly over the chimney stack.

The second owl was in full view on the front of the crumbling roof, and obliged by staying there whilst I took a few photos.

I'm pleased to say that the owl was still there when I left, and I set off for Yorkshire with a smile on my face!

Hopefully, in about a week's time, I'll have processed the Yorkshire photos and will be posting again!

  1. It makes me happy to see them doing well. Love the first owl peeking over the top of the tree:) Recently we found a family of 8 Burrowing Owls at a business center in their parking lot. It always amazes me how they intermingle together....it's also what worries me. We have been constantly checking up on them here. Everyone is happy and doing well. Glad you do the same.

    1. It's good to hear about your Burrowing Owls, Chris. Delighted to hear that they're doing well in their rather alien surroundings! Can we expect a post on them soon?

  2. I too like the one popping it's head over the chimney stack it. But it's also obvious from the images (especially the last one) is how confiding they are with your presence....like the feet on the last one too:)

    1. Thanks Doug. The owls are not always that confiding - somtimes they're off as soon as my car approaches.

  4. Hi Richard

A night Heron - what a find! I'd love to see one of those.

Lovely LO images, my friend; I really enjoyed looking at the one on the chimney. They have such a comical side to them, the Little Owls.

    All the best.

    1. Thank you Christian. I still never managed more than a very distant record shot of the Night Heron - and now it's gone!

  5. Hi Richard!
I just love the first pic!
I think its hilarious! So lost in all this greenery, how cute, especially for a "foot fetishist"!! LOL!!
More seriously, a crumbing barn is a fantastic place to establish oneself... being an owl!!
    Cheerio amigo!

    1. Hi Noushka. Good to hear from you, and thank you for your kind comments. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that the barn doesn't crumble too fast. I'm hoping to have more feet for you and Doug soon! All the best. Richard

    1. Thanks Diane. It's taken me a pretty solid week and a half to process those from Yorkshire, but all done now!

      Have a good one yourself!
