We had a relatively uneventful (birdwise) two day trip on the Trent & Mersey Canal, but there was one highlight when I found a Kestrel firmly stuck in a recently trimmed hawthorn hedge. Don't know how it got there, but I think I had seen a Peregrine earlier, so maybe it had dived to escape. There was a very deep ditch between me and the bird, so I went and got my boat hook and spent quite a long while slowly moving the branches aside and prising it out. I was worried that it might have a broken wing, but as soon as I managed to free it, it flew away strongly - perhaps its second lucky escape of the afternoon!
