barn owl (no, not Barn Owl!) - on 30th November, 2013

Sorry, couldn't resist that one! My Little Owl Site No.02 continues to give delight. This day it was one of those rare occasions when an owl was visible inside the barn when I walked past. It's only happened twice before in the past four years, and last time it really was a Barn Owl!

This time I managed a half-decent shot, but had great difficulty in seeing the owl in my viewfinder as the contrast in light between inside and out was so great. This one taken at 1/100 sec., ISO 1,000.

Little Owl - my Site No.02
Owling and posts are probably going to be a little thin this month as I've got a lot of commitments before Christmas. I do, however, have a post 'stacked up', featuring a visit to Calke Park.

  1. As usual, lovely picture and another chapter in your continuing success with Little Owls. There are no Little Owls here, of course, but on Saturday I did see a female/juvenile Snowy Owl. I also liked you play on words with barn owl and Barn Owl...maybe next time it'll be little egrets and Little Egrets!!

    1. Thank you, David.

If there's one species of owl that I'd give my right arm to see it's Snowy Owl - and you might get another play on words on that theme too!

Strangely, I've got two posts lined up for future publication, and one does include a recent encounter with a Little Egret on one of my owl sites - don't know where I'm going to find a little egret, however.

    2. Snowy Owl is present in southern Ontario almost every winter. This year seems to have a bit of an incursion. Our record is four within twenty minutes of our front door.

    3. You've now presented me with a dilemma, David - if I visit Canada, what time of year do I visit? Do I come in the summer and enjoy beautiful weather and the summer birds, or do I come in the winter and endure the cold (which I'm not used to!) but see iconic owls?!?!

    4. You obviously have to come twice!!

    5. I'd love to, David, but I don't think I can afford the time or the finances at the moment. It's something to work towards, however!

  2. Lovely, and of course you have the tell tale sign on the beam where it does some perching. The soft texture to the image gives a nice feel to it.

  3. I can't blame you for returning to this owl site. He is precious.

    1. Thank you, Gail. I was devastated a few years back when one of the owls at this site fell prey to a Sparrowhawk. Fortunately the remaining bird found another mate. I dread losing these birds, but know that it will probably happen one day.

  4. Looking forward to the post from Calke Park and hopefully one or two owl posts

    1. Will probably post on Calke over the weekend, Doug. I'm quite pleased with some of the photos, but the only bird of note was the Brambling.

Not got any more owl images up my sleeve at the moment. Was due out today but called it off due to the high winds and rain - it'd have been a real miracle if an owl was out in that!

  5. Considering the lack of light, this pic has come out very nicely!
You "barn owl" is really cute!
    Cheers Richard!

    1. Thank you, Noushka. Right now I'd love a bit of your Pyrenean sunlight!
